All-out Effort to Help
The saddening news of
the Sichuan earthquake has sparked off an array
of fundraising activities among the schools of
Yew Chung. Having empathy with the victims and
holding onto the duties of global citizens, Yew
Chung students have responded promptly to the relief
campaigns at their corresponding localities. A
special relief fund has been set up by the Directorate
to collect ongoing donations from the Yew Chung
communities. Donation boxes are at all Yew Chung
schools.
Shortly after the earthquake,
YCIS Shanghai has started to raise fund at their
International Food Fair, Dress Down Day and Non-uniform
Day. All profits of the Grand Viennese Ball in June
went to Sichuan Earthquake Relief Fund. An Empty
Bowl charity sale was also organised.
At YCIS
Hong Kong, students
attended assemblies in which student leaders led
the prayer for the earthquake victims. The Secondary
students handmade red bracelets for sale to raise
fund. At the Yew Chung annual dinner in Hong Kong
on May 16, about HK$10,000 was raised by teachers
and staff in just one night and will be sent to World
Vision Hong Kong.
At YCIS
Qingdao, the Sports Day on May 17 became
a charity event for the earthquake relief. Besides,
all students were issued with raffle tickets to take
home to sell to family and friends with attractive
prizes to raise fund.
At YCIS
Chongqing, a dedication
ceremony for the fundraising box was held where
students shared their thoughts towards the tragedy.
A walk-a-thon
charity was organised on May 26.
At YCIS
Beijing, the Mufti Day on May 21 kicked
off the fundraising efforts, raising 51,000 yuan,
and the amount is increasing every day. Classes have
been making and writing cards with messages of support
and love for the affected school children. Following
the week of official mourning, YCIS Beijing has re-ignited
the Olympic spirit with a school torch relay around
Honglinjin Park lake. This was followed with the
opportunity for students and parents to have their
photo taken with an official Olympic Relay Torch
for a donation towards the earthquake relief fund.
We hope that students would have learnt to care
for the unfortunate people and the world around them,
and would take the initiative in discovering more
about nature and the Earth. Our thoughts and prayers
will stay with the victims of this tremor.
