Our Thoughts and Prayers Will Stay with Victims
Director's letter to all Yew
Chung schools
All of us have been saddened
by the large-scale destruction and large number
of victims caused by the earthquake that hit Sichuan
on May 12. At the time of the earthquake, Mr. Tom
Ulmet, our Superintendent of YCIS in Mainland China,
happened to be at our Chongqing school We were
relieved when he reported to us that all staff
and students in our school were safe.
Our Local Regional Office (LRO) in Chongqing reported
that all the students, teachers and staff were
evacuated from the campus immediately after the
earthquake. Only minor damage has been done to
the school building, and classes are now resumed
and the school is now running as normal. The damaged
parts of the building are now being repaired and
special attention is being paid to ensure the structural
safety of the buildings. Engineers will arrive
shortly to inspect the construction of our Chongqing
school to ensure the safety of all students and
staff.
The Central Government of and local government
of China are experienced in disaster rescue and
relief. Let us pray God to grant them great wisdom
in the relief and reconstruction work. We will
also keep all those who have lost their lives and
those who are suffering from the disaster in our
prayers.
Our thoughts and prayers will stay with the victims
of this earthquake. If any of you require assistance
for your family members in the affected area, please
send the details to our LRO and we will try our
best to help.
Meanwhile, Deputy Director Rev. Choy, Rev. Yan,
together with Assistant Director Winnie Cheng,
have set up a relief team of the Foundation and
will co-ordinate with the principals of Yew Chung
schools to conduct fundraising for the relief and
the reconstruction of the affected regions.
Moreover, we hope that students would learn to
care for the unfortunate people and the world around
them, and would take the initiative in discovering
more about nature and the Earth.
Let’s try our
best to contribute to the relief efforts.
God bless,
Dr. Betty Chan Po-king, Director
