For students aged 6-18
Venues: Beijing
Dates: July 12 - July 29, 2008

Learn Mandarin Chinese (Putonghua)
The course will focus on speaking and listening comprehension of Mandarin Chinese (Putonghua), building vocabulary, basic sentence structures, learning characters and pronunciation leading to fluency. You do not have to know Chinese to enroll in the summer school. This programme is an excellent introduction for overseas non-Chinese speaking students to the language and culture of China. Teaching faculty is professional and experienced. and during excursions students will be accompanied by local students who will act as their study partners to practice Putonghua.

Experience Chinese Culture

Daily formal language lessons are integrated into afternoon cultural activities, such as making kites and learning Chinese kungfu, experiencing the beauty of Chinese calligraphy and painting, and appreciating the Chinese traditional puppet show, traditional music and dance. Daily language and cultural activities are reinforced through field trips and excursions to Beijing street markets to practice bargaining, and to historic sites to practice asking questions.

Encounter China
As the ancient capital city of China, Beijing provides a wonderful base for learning the Chinese language and culture. Studying and practicing the language naturally in daily life situations reinforces the understanding of the Chinese language and culture. Short experiential learning excursions are at the heart of the Yew Wah International Summer School. Students will visit the Forbidden City, the Great Wall, Summer Palace and Olympic stadium to see both the ancient and the modern facets of China.
